Principal tattles to mom, lesbian teen sues

A 17-year-old can sue her school district and principal, after she's outed to her mother.

Dec 2, 2005 | A federal judge ruled that an Orange County girl can sue her school district and principal for invasion of privacy, because her principal outed her to her mother, the Associated Press reported Friday.

The Garden Grove district had tried to argue that since now-17-year-old Charlene Nguon kissed and hugged her girlfriend on campus, she had no expectation of privacy. A federal judge disagreed.

Broadsheet wonders: Does this same principal notify parents that their children are heterosexual every time boys and girls are caught making out next to the lockers, too? Just asking. "The person to decide when and how to talk with our family about this should have been my daughter, not her principal," Crystal Chhun, the girl's mother, said in a statement.

Broadsheet looks forward to following Nguon's case, and hopes that there's still time for the teen to use this saga in her college admissions essays.
