Tough-guy actor Richard Widmark is the subject of a new Biography (8 p.m., A&E). On a rerun of ER (10 p.m., NBC), a crazed patient's knife attack leaves two doctors in critical condition. Investigative Reports (10 p.m., A&E) looks at the reputation of the FBI in light of controversial events like the Waco fire and the false arrest of Richard Jewell in the Summer Olympics bombing. Cable comedy Rude Awakening (10 p.m., Showtime) begins a new season with former child star-turned-addict Billie Frank (Sherilyn Fenn) backsliding on her rehab. 48 Hours (10 p.m., CBS) revisits a 1999 report on that ever-popular topic, polygamy.

Specials

Experts examine the accuracy of events depicted in Mel Gibson's new Revolutionary War epic in History or Hollywood?: The Patriot (9 p.m., History Channel). And while you're in a historical mood, you might want to stick around for Save Our History: America's Most Endangered 2000 (10 p.m., History Channel), in which this year's landmarks most in need of preservation are announced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. By the way, there's only 11 of them, not 2,000.
